Gilwell Reunion 2018 – Dwayne Fields Keynote

National Events, Reunion
Each year Gilwell Reunion is treated to a keynote speaker. This year was the turn of Scout Ambassador Dwayne Fields to entertain the masses with his story of his first experience of Scouting and how it led him to be a Scout Ambassador. Dwayne, who moved to the UK when he was five, explained how on a chance trip to a Cub Pack where he was only there as he was dropping a friend off changed how he formed relationships I went from a scared, nervous, anxious, conscious kid to, for the very first time since arriving in the UK, being able to express myself... ...For me the biggest and most powerful that that man [Cub Leader] did was that he looked at me and said "why don't you come inside"[to the Cub Pack] Dwayne counts some of those first people he met in Cubs amongst his friends today and...

Gilwell Reunion 2018 – Hannah Kentish

National Events, Reunion
Gilwell Reunion 2018 will see the first handover of the UK Youth Commissioner role as Hannah passes on the reigns to Ollie Wood. We caught up with Hannah to discuss her time as UK Youth Commissioner. After being appointed as the first ever UK Youth Commissioner Hannah has had many successes, not least building the role up from an idea to national, and international, prominence, however in Hannah’s words There are a number of things that I would say have been huge achievements in the role. We took the concept of a youth commissioner from a UK Youth Commissioner to having nearly 400 across the UK. In 4 years thats a huge amount of people to be mobilised into roles. We’ve made changes to our bylaws to ensure sure that 50% of the people on our national council are young people Hannah als...

The first full weekend in September can only mean one thing in the Scouting calendar…Gilwell Reunion, the one time each year where adults in Scouting from across the world get together to meet old friends, make new ones, share ideas and let their hair down. The evening was officially opened by Camp Chief Ross Maloney who extended a warm welcome to the 2500+ adults from across the country and around the world before going through his highlights for the weekend and introducing fellow members of Team UK who also welcomed the masses and hoped that everyone had an enjoyable weekend. Scout Radio later caught up with Tim Kidd, UK Chief Commissioner who describes Reunion as the most intense weekend of the year...but its great to meet so many people and to hear so many stories of things they a...

Reunion 2017 – Harambee For Kenya

Events, News, Reunion
One of the mainstays of Gilwell Reunion over the past decade has been Harambee For Kenya, who have had their stall on Essex Chase, selling their soapstone carvings and raising awareness for their project helping street children in Kenya. Martin was joined in the studio by Leslie, who told him about the work that Harambe For Kenya do. One of the outcomes of the work that Harambe for Kenya have achieved is getting all of the street children, not only off the street, well fed and educated, but also share Scouting with them. We got them off the streets first so they were safe, they have an education. Some of them have left and work, have families of their own. We've got our first boy going to university and another one going to college and they are all absolutely delightful but they are all ...

Reunion 2017 – John Hemming-Clark

Events, Reunion, Uncategorised
Sunday's morning show saw the infamous author (in his own words) of 'In you go - a year or two in the life of a Scout Leader' John Hemming-Clark join Martin for a chat about his works. Martin was keen to discover the origins of John's books and was delighted to hear that it was a very Scouting reason that inspired John to write In You Go: When some of my Scouts started putting out feelers about going to the World Jamboree in Japan in 2015 and needed to do some fundraising...I said, "I know, I shall write a book". So I wrote in you go...and donated 50p or £1, depending on how it was sold, to the cause. Not content with writing books for adults and Scout Leaders, John has embarked on writing a number of short stories aimed at the young audience: Horace Horrise- the UKs cheekiest, funniest a...
