News, WSJ
The 23rd World Scout Jamboree has officially opened! Over 35'000 people joined together for a fantastic show including traditional Japanese drumming and the handover ceremony, where Scout flags were handed from Sweden to Japan. One explorer had a very unique experience during the proceedings: "I got invested into Explorers and it just makes you realise the scale of Scouting around the world." Our Scout Radio WSJ reporters Scott & Adam were amongst the crowd and asked members of one of the UK units what they thought of the momentous occasion: [soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/216946715" params="color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false" width="100%" height="166" iframe="true" /]

UK membership fee abolished for adults in Scouting

UK membership fee abolished for adults in Scouting

Fundraising Events, News
The Scout Association has announced that, from January 2016, the HQ membership fee should not be charged adult members and should be calculated based on young people only. This encourages the idea that volunteering is more attractive to future and current adults when they do not pay a membership fee. The new HQ fee will be collected annually and calculated based on numbers of Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts and Explorer Scouts. The HQ membership fee for all members under 18 will be standardised at £25.50 (£25 for prompt payment) for 2016. The new calculation has been designed so that the total amount of money that the UKHQ receives should not change (based on 2015 census data). Our research shows that 86% of adult fees are already paid locally via the youth subscription or fundraising...

National Scout & Guide Symphony Orchestra all set for summer performances

Birmingham, Events, National Events, News
Over 75 Scouts & Guides from all across the UK will join together this summer to form the National Scout & Guide Symphony Orchestra. The NSGSO is a week-long course where Scouts & Guides take part in music rehearsals and masterclasses, which orchestra manager Jill Bowman describes as a "week of fun, friendship and music". The course, which is celebrating it's 40th Birthday nearly didn't go ahead this year after the orchestra was closed down in December. Jack is from Ipswich and set up a very successful petition to save the NSGSO. He thinks music and Scouting is an important combination: "Music is a very team based activity which goes very well with Scouting & Guiding because some of the main things we do is leading, encouraging others to lead and also knowing when to ste...

Hitchin Scouts – ScoutITOut to recruit new volunters

Counties, Hertfordshire, News
Scouts hold activities and real campfire in the Hitchin town centre On Saturday 13th June, Hitchin Scouts filled the Market Place in Hitchin with a climbing wall, sailing boat, a glider plane and other activities to help promote the youth organisation as part of their SCOUTitOUT campaign. Despite the rain, there were plenty of people having a go at scaling the climbing wall or even trying to make milkshakes using a pedal bike. There were also opportunities to learn some basic first aid and build flowerpots out of recycled materials. Each of the activities related to a Scouting challenge badge, including Teamwork, Expedition, Adventure and Creative. The day ended with a real campfire in the centre of the square, attended by over 250 people, invited guests from the local community, and a...
Scouts Still Busy on the TT Scoreboards

Scouts Still Busy on the TT Scoreboards

Isle of Man, News
2015 marks the 104th year Scouts have been involved in the TT. Scouts are a familiar sight running the lap tear offs and the time boards, but that is only a small part of what they do to ensure the scoreboard’s smooth running. A team of Scouts and Explorer Scouts work in the timing tower checking when riders pass locations around the island. They relay this information to the Scouts manning the clocks above the tear offs. There’s a crew behind the scenes that run the lap times from the painters to the Scouts in front of the scoreboards. Then there is the Scouts that operate the light box that control the light above the clocks, on when at Cronk ny Mona and off when at the grandstand. To ensure everything runs smoothly each race requires a minimum of 70 that is made up of older Cubs, Sc...
