Summit17 looked at and asked members what should we willĀ be doing beyond 2018, the year in which Vision 2018 expires. A key part of the weekend was listening to people, Matt discussed how The Association was going to engage with Leaders and other adult members as part of putting the plan together for beyond 2018. "We are asking people: what do they think are the big issues?" Matt also touched on t...

The weekend campĀ at the UK Scout Headquarters Gilwell Park gave Scouts and Explorers from all over the country a real fright. Held over Halloween weekend, the event was definitely something a little different. After a full day of activities Gilwell Park became a spooky ghost town on Ā the Saturday night, made up with eerie lighting, mist and fog and genuinely terrifying noises coming from all directions. A highlight of the camp - the three mazes participants were asked to brave. Ranging from pitch blac...

Queen Scout Award Interview with Hannah Kentish

Queen Scout Award Interview with Hannah Kentish

Explorers, National Events, News, Scout Network, YouShape
I interviewed UK Youth Commissioner, Hannah Kentish, on top of a mountain within the Arctic Circle. This is a sentence which is seldom uttered by a member of the Scout Association, which is strikingly different to the Wednesday night in the explorer hut where I found myself the week before. Nevertheless, on top of a mountain with the snowline below us, following a gruelling eight hour day on the third day of our Queen Scout Award practice hike Hannah and I sat down for an interview. The Queen Scout Award is the highest award a young person can achieve and consists of nights away, skill, physical activity and service sections followed by an expedition and a residential experience. Anyone from the ages of sixteen to twenty-five can sign up and it can be done in conjunction with the Duke of E...

"We've had a bit of engagement with him and I hope we continue to, because I think he's a real inspiration to young people." Tim Peake has previously credited his success in his career as an astronaut to his background in Scouting, and Matt Hyde explains that he believes that adventurous and inspirational figures such as Tim are brilliant role models to young people. So, should he be the n...
